Cool pipol #37: Duane Denison

Rock on, Duane!

1. Who are your heroes?
Heroes? Rembrandt (defiant to the end), Scotty Moore (Elvis’ guitar player), Andy Warhol (painter from Pittsburgh), Sisyphus (at least he got to walk downhill and relax a bit, right?).

2. If you weren’t making art, what do you think you’d be doing?
I’d be laying around, reading, watching tv, snacking, kinda like right now.

3. What’s the best (or dumbest) thing that’s been said to you after a show?
“I like what you’re trying to do”

4. Time for REAL TALK: Who is the biggest asshole you’ve ever shared a stage/studio with?
Easy–John Cale. We (late period Lizard) did a studio session with him, and you’ll never meet a more pretentiously unoriginal jerk.

5. What films (and/or books) really inspired you that our reader should check out for themselves?
I read a lot and can’t always remember them, but lately it’s been “The Savage Detectives” by Roberto Bolano and “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies” by Jane Austen and Seth Grahame-Smith….oh, and the Edward DeBono books about thinking…..For films, all the early Herzog stuff….and “Stay Away Joe” starring Elvis Presley and Burgess Meredith.

6. Who would you rather eat dinner with, Danny Devito or Dog The Bounty Hounter?
Definitely Danny Devito–I can’t stand that Dog idiot and his beachball of a wife. I don’t think I could gag down a single bite, looking at those two!

7. Was middle school your “Vietnam”? What were your survival tactics?
Yeah, I lied, cowered, bullied, etc until I got old enough (and grew about a foot in height) for it to become unnecessary.

8. Do you have hope for this new generation of Lindsay Lohan worshipping, TMZ sucking, music downloading (and have never owned a cd or LP), fast food gobbling teenagers? Are they a lost cause?
In some ways, I think they’re fucked. But I hold out hope, mostly beause I have a 4 year old daughter that likes the music I play for her (Beach Boys, Beatles, Dock Boggs, Johnny Horton, etc). I played and sang a few tunes at her preschool earlier this year, and those little kids went wild! They just need to see and hear the real thing and they’ll figure out what’s what.

9. You are guilty of shameful things. What are these BAAAAAD things?
Oh, nothing too terrible–a few petty thefts, mental cruelty, destruction of property, etc…mostly the result of peer pressure and chemical imbalances.
10. What could you NOT live with out?
Coffee, cheese, cats

11. What’s the most important life lesson you’ve ever learned?
Sooner or later, it’s your turn to cry…..that, or that no one really cares but your mom….

12. What band should people reading this be listening to?
Why, the newly remastered Jesus Lizard albums, of course! And the new Legendary Shack Shakers (out next spring) too! Oh, and also Louis Andriessen….Neil Hamburger…..

13. Give the internet some words to live by…. we all know it needs some!
This lady walks into a bar. The bartender says,”what are you doing here, you douchebag?” The lady gasps in disbelief. The bartender apologizes, saying “I totally thought you were someone else, oh god I’m so sorry, etc” and offers to buy her a drink. The lady accepts, and promptly orders a vinegar and water.
